I'm taking a bit of a break from FAB Snacks while I work on other projects but I continue to receive FAB Snacks emails and phone calls. Earlier this week, I received a call from a mother of an 18 month old child with peanut allergy and corn allergy. She is looking for safe snacks for her child and I thought perhaps all you amazing food allergy folks might have some suggestions for her. Keep in mind, we have to avoid cross-contamination too, so a snack without peanut or corn but made in a facility or on equipment which handles peanut and corn isn't going to work for them.
Please leave a comment with any helpful tips or suggestions you may have for this mom and little one. Thank you!

I don't know very much about corn allergy, but especially for 18 months, I think focusing on the basics, like fresh fruit - watermelon (my son's favorite at the time), blueberries, steamed apples, bananas, etc. is perfect. Even veggies like cut up green beans, cubed sweet potato, or peas if you can get them to eat them. Sunbutter is yummy and can be spread on things like rice cakes and crackers (read the rice cakes for peanut facility warnings but I get safe ones at whole foods). Avocado spread on things is nice and healthy too. My son has always loved lay's potato chips, of course with supervision at a young age. It was the first food he willingly put in his month.
This company makes a peanet butter substitute:

They were giving out samples a few months back. I signed up for one but the response was so great that they couldn't send me one so I didn't get to try it out.
Thanks for your comments! Keep sending in suggestions. As you can imagine, peanuts are not nearly as challenging to avoid as corn. The corn allergy and avoiding cross-contamination with corn is particularly difficult for them. I am sure she appreciates the help!
I have a little boy who has a corn allergy. He is 2 1/2 and he has had this corn allergy since he was 7 months. He also has to avoid nuts and egg. I have a corn allergy cookbook and recipes and would be more than willing to give all the info I have to anyone in need of help with corn allergy. I got help from someone else and it was great. I would highly suggest cornallergens.com and you can email me at christyhubbard@verizon.net.
One of my kids' favorites is Puppy Chow (a.k.a. Chex Mix, Monkey Munch or other such names). You use Chex cereal package directions, substitue SunButter for the peanut butter and make sure and check your other ingredients. (I hear Hershey's choc. chips are the "safe" ones.) The SunButter website also has lots of recipes for treats (and meals) that are peanut-free.
