I am happy to report we finally got our hands on some cookies from Sha Sha Bakery this weekend. They weren't too easy to find, but we were able to locate them in the bakery section of a nearby Whole Foods Market. They came in a 12 oz plastic tub with a nice visible nut free symbol, as well as a Kosher Pareve symbol, on the label. According to the Sha Sha Bread FAQ page,
the plant that the cookies are made in is a nut free plant, meaning we do not use any nuts in our products whatsoever. (This includes peanuts)
No, we do not use milk or any other dairy products in any of products.
Q: What products do you have made without Wheat?
A: We have 6 products made without wheat flour. They are:
Spelt Bread, Raisin Cinnamon Spelt Bread, Spelt & Kamut Pizza Crust, Spelt & Flax Lavash, Spelt Ginger Snaps, and our Spelt Lemon Poppy Snaps. These products are all made with Organic Spelt flour, and contain no wheat.
Spelt does contain gluten similar to Wheat"
Ironically, after going through all that effort to find them, my sons did not like the taste! I think we'll try another flavor and see if that's any better. Personally, I thought they were tasty, with their subtle cocoa flavor, and I liked the small size and shape too. In addition, the tub contained quite a few of the tiny cocoa snaps, so it seems like a good purchase for sharing at school or other gatherings. We saw ginger snaps and marble snaps at the store, and Sha Sha's is offering ginger, cocoa, and lemon flavors online.

We LOVE their cookies--both the cocoa and the ginger. I used them for Tinman's Heart cookies at K's Wizard of Oz party.
What a good idea--Tinman Heart Cookies! I LOVE it!
I am glad you commented because I did not get a chance to read the FAQ's today (I've read them in the past) and wasn't 100% sure about their dairy-free status before I dropped off at school this morning. Now that I'm back, your comment reminded me to verify that. I've edited to add in a few of their FAQ's which address the cookies nut-free and dairy-free status and also answer the question of wheat allergens. Thanks for stopping by!
Oh no! Too bad they didn't work out.
I would love to post this review in the Go Dairy Free product reviews with links and credits to your blog. Would that be okay? Thanks!
Alisa, thanks for your comment. Yes, it's fine to include the Sha Sha cookies review on Go Dairy Free. (Thanks--that's nice!)
We often have these tubs as well as their breads. We see them in every other grocery store where I am.
Well, it's good to hear an honest review! :)
Karen, you are so lucky to be able to have such access to Sha Sha's cookies! Jenny, it's the rare occasion that my kids don't like my food allergy friendly finds! So many of these specialty foods are really very high quality; we're kind of spoiled in a weird way. The Sha Sha cookies have more of a cocoa taste and less of a chocolate taste despite their appearance. Also, they are not as sweet as vanilla wafers or other typical cookies from the regular supermarket cookie aisle. I am tempted to say it may be a more "grown-up" flavor...
Jennifer-I'm going to assume these are egg free as well? If so, they are right up our ally with our egg allergy. I'll have to ck our whole foods. Thanks for the review!
Hi Ruth! There was a statement about egg traces on the package. The website says
"Q: Are your products vegan?
A: Our breads are all vegan. Only our Ginger snaps contain eggs. Our Spelt Ginger Snaps, Cocoa Snaps, and Spelt Lemon Snaps contain Raw Honey."
Thanks Jennifer! We don't worry about traces of egg. Thankfully we aren't THAT allergic. In fact...we're hoping we are outgrowing. Thanks again! Really glad your website is here.
No problem. Thanks for the kind words! Let me know what you guys think of the cookies when you find them. They weren't easy to spot at Whole Foods (Bellingham); I went round in circles for a while...
