Winners of the Meraby baking mixes and vanilla giveaway were notified this morning. Thanks to everyone who participated--this particular giveaway was mighty popular! Thanks also to Meraby for contributing these tasty prizes! So nice to have some help making baking easier for peanut-free, tree nut-free, egg-free and dairy-free diets.
Over the weekend, I came across an interesting press release in McLean's blog. It's about a Canadian government subsidy for Bobobaby, a relatively new food manufacturer of healthful, food allergy friendly baby food, and also Bobokids. Does anyone know of any similar government programs in the U.S.? That would be nice, actually, if it did not make taxes higher!

Hi,
Yes, the Canadian Government is rather generous to most start-ups, especially if it can better the health of Canadians in general, children even more so. The Provincial Governments are also quite generous. So these companies usually get subsidies from both governments!
But remember the Canadian Government has to foot the bill for health care - health care is free for all Canadians regardless of income. Therefore, investing in anything making Canadians healthier will in the end reduce the cost of health care for the government.
Another Canadian company (from Montreal Quebec, my hometown) that is doing very well making allergen-free baked goods (peanut, tree nut, egg and dairy free) including cakes that looked like those you get at the supermarket. The name of the company is GuardianAngel Food. Have a look at their website: http://www.guardianangelfoods.com/eng/home.htm. My daughter will be in heaven when we go visit family for halloween. Now only if we could get them to ship to USA!
One the negative: more than 1/2 of your paycheck goes to Government....so free health care, social net, and subsidies here and there means less money in Canadian pockets. Can't have your cake and eat it too!
